Students were given 3 pictures (a horse and carriage, gold, and the state of California). They were also given a piece of gold (spray painted rocks ;) ). Students then had to decide what they all had in common! Here were some responses:
"The carriage carried the gold to California."
"They went to California to find gold in the carriage."
"They were looking for gold."
Next, we came together as a class and watched a book on TrueFlix about the Gold Rush. Students instantly started making connections!
