This new unit focuses on our personal, physical, mental, social, and spiritual health.  This is a great unit for 1st graders!  This week we are focusing on what does it mean to be healthy.  The writing in the purple is what the students came up with, after we read the book we circled that facts that were the same.  Today our comprehension focus was on topic, main idea, and details.  We read a story called MyPlate... about the 5 major food groups.  Students then created a graphic organizer about the story.
Talk with your child about what it means to be healthy in your home.  Also, next week we will be setting goals to accomplish in the next 5 weeks.  Some examples of goals might be: read 20 minutes a night, eat a vegetable for lunch and dinner, walk 5 minutes... (these goals will have to be obtainable with the help of you at home)... talk with  your child about a goal that they might want to set.

Today we practiced being reporters for our summative assessment.  Tomorrow I will be recording each student reporting on a conflict and how they chose to solve it!  They are very excited.

We were working on the 'I can' statement: I can compare and  contrast events in a story.  To introduce this skill, we compared and contrasted our likes with a partner.  We used a venn-diagram and pre-typed out situations (i.e. I like pizza, I have a sister..) the students had to see what they had in common.  It was a great learning experience.  The venn-diagrams are hanging outside the door, if you get a chance stop by and check them out!

Students used magazines to find sight words!  They did AWESOME!  This is a simple activity you could do at home.  If you want to challenge them more, you could have them find a sight word, then use it in a sentence.

This activity was done using 10 frames for subtraction.  Students learned to make a 10 then subtract the remaining amount!
We are continuing to work on addition and subtraction relationships!
