What RESOURCE?

Today we officially picked our resource for the Farmer's Market.  Please ask your child what resource they chose and if you have time help them do some research at home.  Here are some questions that might guide your research at home:
* What is your resource?
* Where would I have to live in order to be around my resource? (i.e. If my resource is fish- I would need to be by the water).
* Would I have to move away from Iowa?
* How does my resource get to me?
* Who would I get my resource from?  (what human group)
*Any interesting facts*

Greater Than or Less Than..

Yesterday, I was absent in the afternoon for an appointment, and I met quickly with the sub.  I was sharing with him the math plans- and he was in shock that first graders do greater than and less than!  I am beyond proud at how hard your kiddos work in math!
Today we played a game for greater than.  I posted  numbers around the room..I then wrote a number on the board- the kiddos then had to stand by a number that was greater than the number I wrote on the board!  They had a blast!

Our morning meeting activity this week is all about getting to know each other and things we have in common.
To play this- a friend stands in the middle and says, "I like ______."  Whoever likes the same thing stands up and walks to another chair.  The friend that does not find a chair is in the middle, and is now the sharer!  We have had a lot of fun learning more about each other!

Adjectives are mighty fine, they paint a picture in your mind, how many which one and what kind?  Adjectives are mighty fine!!
We used the resource apples to come up with describing words!  We came up with a great list of words!

Of course we had to use adjectives to describe how the apples tasted :)

Today we began learning about the Gold Rush!  We are learning how resources transform populations, and the Gold Rush is a perfect example.
Students were given 3 pictures (a horse and carriage, gold, and the state of California).  They were also given a piece of gold (spray painted rocks ;) ).  Students then had to decide what they all had in common! Here were some responses:
"The carriage carried the gold to California."
"They went to California to find gold in the carriage."
"They were looking for gold."
Next, we came together as a class and watched a book on TrueFlix about the Gold Rush.  Students instantly started making connections!
